How to update controller firmware using the ThinkSystem System Manager for DE Series GUI

Description

This article introduces the procedure used to upgrade your controller firmware using the ThinkSystem System Manager (TSM) for DE Series GUI. You should regularly upgrade the controller firmware to make sure you have all the latest features and bug fixes.

Before proceeding, ensure that all the data has been backed up properly, that the storage array and all drives have an Optimal status, and that no configuration changes are running on the storage array. As part of the upgrade process, a health check will be performed to assess all storage array components to ensure the upgrade process can proceed. Checks include failed unassigned drives, drives with older versions of DACstore, and exclusive operations running. Full list can be found in the System Upgrade section of DE Series Hardware and Maintenance Guide.

  2. For this example, Controller Firmware Update Bundle 11.60.3R2 (lnvgy_fw_storage_08.63.00.02.005-6000_anyos_noarch.zip) will be used.
  3. Extract the ZIP file to a folder on your management client.
  4. Use a Web browser to log in to the TSM GUI with the admin account and password.

  1. Click Browse, and then select the ThinkSystem SAN OS Software file which was previously downloaded from the Lenovo Support site.
    • In this example controller firmware file “lnvgy_fw_storage_08.63.00.02.005-6000_anyos_noarch.dlp” will be selected.
    • Note: If you have selected a SAN OS software file to upgrade, the file can be transferred to the controller without activating. To do this, once the SAN OS software file has been selected, select the Transfer files now, but do not upgrade (activate upgrade later) check box.
